Prototype Guide

Prototype is a game that focuses primarily on slicing, shooting, impaling… well basically doing a bunch of terrible and awesome things to people and creatures. Although there are some other aspects to the game, such as movement and medals, the game is very obviously focused on the combat, so in this guide I will not touch on this lesser, almost “thrown in” aspects of the title.

GENERAL TIPS/STRATEGIES:

1. Use the Environment, the city is a great place for moving around when you are fighting enemies. The main use of the environment is evading the military, who can start off as easy and then turn into a nightmare if you stay in any area for an extended period of time. Running away and hiding in alleys to change form or regenerate health is a great way not to end up dead.

2. Transform ALOT, make sure you always have a handy disguise ready for when things get messy, and make sure this alternative form is a soldier. I say this because if you are a civilian and you are in a military base they will still attack you, but if you are a solider they will leave you alone for the most part. Transforming is a great way to heal as well as simply sneak by groups of enemies you don’t want to bother with.

3. Military Hardware = Rape, Its almost a shame, but no matter how strong you get, or how adept with the claws or blade, they will never compare to the raw power of a hijacked helicopter or tank. The weapons you pick up from dead soldiers are considerably strong as it is, the vehicles you can get are almost overpowered. The helicopter is by far the most powerful weapon in the game, and you get to use it in a few of the harder boss fights. You upgrade your military weapons skill not by using evolution points, but by consuming certain military personnel.

4. Regeneration is your friend, when you get the the harder parts of the game, or start playing on the hard difficulty, you use your passive regeneration ALOT. This is due to the fact that it is sometimes too easy to die while trying to grab someone to consume, or consuming is simply not an option at all. Upgrading health regen is key and should always be at the top of your list of upgrades. Alex is a very fast character, which means when you are on the verge of death you can simply run around in circles and jump from roof to roof while your health regenerates.

5. Strike Teams: Friend AND Foe, strike teams, while generally a bad thing for the most part, can also be a great way to call a ride to your location. This is a fortunate use for you and an unfortunate thing for the helicopter pilots who are about to get more than they bargained for. The fastest way to move from one location to the other is by air, and when you need to go a long distance, it gets tiresome hopping from rooftop to rooftop for what seems like hours. The solution? Simply skyjack a helicopter and use it as your personal pleasure vehicle.

6. Real men Run Away, one of the best combat strategies in Prototype is to simply hit and run, alot of enemies are slower and in some cases hit like trucks if you let them. Military bases can be hornet nests of carnage if you stick around, so it can be a good idea to swoop in, trim the numbers a bit, then run away to regenerate. On harder difficulties this is essential, as it is nearly impossible to fight groups of enemies non stop.

FIGHTING THE MILITARY STRATEGY:

The military are the biggest adversary in Prototype, and they come in a few forms, most weak and a few stronger and more annoying.

Marine/Blackwatch Soldier:

The best way to fight these guys is to just slice them in half, or use the area of effect attacks such as the ground slam. One great aspect of the guns you can use is that they automatically aim straight at enemies with perfect accuracy, which means one assault rifle is often enough to take care of a couple dozen soldiers. The only real threat from these enemies are the rocket launcher soldiers, who can knock Alex down.

Tank/APC:

Vehicles can be both easy and hard to fight, they are slow and ponderous, but at the same time pack a punch in damage if you stay in any place too long. The best way to kill these is by using the “hulk hands”, but basically any of alex’s weapon forms will do the trick. Another way of getting rid of these adversaries is to just hijack one tank and kill the others with it.

Helicopters:

Helicopters can often be annoying, as you have to take the time to actually target them and track them in order to kill them. They can do a fair bit of damage to Alex if you let them, but can often be evaded with ease along rooftops or in alleys. Again, the best way to kill these enemies other than throwing a car at them is to simply skyjack one and use the homing missiles on any others in the area.

Super Soldiers:

These are one of the most annoying enemies in the game, as they are often in groups and can do massive damage to Alex if you are not careful. These guys can pick Alex up and hit him around with ease, so the best strategy is to kill them before they reach you using military weapons or a vehicle. Other than that, the best way is to use the blade arm, as it has a bit more range than the claws or the fists.

FIGHTING THE INFECTED STRATEGY:

Infected:

The easiest enemy in the game to fight, these guys can be killed with ease using any sort of combat move. The best way is to use an area of effect attack to kill more than one at once.

“Super” Infected:

Basically the same as the normal infected person, except with mutations that allow these guys to do more damage and take a bit of a beating before dying. These enemies are a lot more mobile than the normal infected which means they can find you on rooftops and can chase you when you run. The best way to deal with these enemies is to use the blade arm or smashing attacks.

Hunter:

The hunter is one of the more annoying enemies in the game due to their extreme speed and mobility. They can also kill Alex pretty fast if you are not careful, so learning how to fight them is an important part of the game. The best way to kill them in my experience is to use the downwards blade slash or the downwards fist smash so they can’t hit you back. If you fight them in packs its better to use a vehicle or devastator attack.

Worms:

These guys don’t come til later in the game, but when they do come into play you will know. These giant worms burst out of the ground and do melee damage as well as throw nearby objects at you. They are hard to kill and they can do alot of damage to vehicles, especially helicopters, so watch out. Best way to kill them is from a distance using weaponry.
